The Story of George Garofano, A Cloud Hacker

In August of 2018, George Garofano was sentenced to 8 months in prison. What did he do? Well, he famously hacked into the cloud storage of more than 250 people and shared their private photos, videos, and documents with the world.

Cloud storage security is pretty serious, but Garofano didn’t need to deal with the back end of the cloud storage sites – he simply posed at a help professional, and asked the users for their private information. And they gave it to him. This is called social networking, and when done right it is very effective.

One of the 250 accounts Garofano hacked into? None other than Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Upton, and Kirsten Dunst. Some argue that the only reason Garofano got such a harsh sentence was that he was able to get into the accounts of someone famous… without celebrity and public push, and such media coverage, his crimes may have never been punished as such.
